Ville Nouvelle

In the Ville Nouvelle, numerous French-styled boulangeries (bakeries) are great if you’re looking to pack for a picnic in Volubulis or find a delicious pastry for the road. Le Macaron (23 Blvd. Nehrou, tel. 0535/401 134, daily 7am-9pm), near the Carrefour and Meknes stadium, has a good selection of breads, but the Ruban Rouge (Ave. des Forces Armées Royales, tel. 0535/510 010, daily 7am-9:30pm), near the Meknes train station, is the best around, with a larger selection of sweet and savory pastries. The Agadir Boulangerie (on the corner of Ave. Yacoub El Mansour and Rue Tilimsane, tel. 0535/521 561, daily 7am-9pm) is the local favorite and slightly less expensive than the others.

For simple pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches, head to S Hirae (Ave. Mohammed V, daily 9am-11pm, 50Dh) near the Abdelkader train station. Beneath the loud red and yellow exterior lies an establishment that has quickly become a favorite with locals and travelers and is one of the few non-smoking places around. The thin-crust pizzas and chicken parmesan are crowd pleasers, and the salads are refreshing, if not excellent.

Relais de Palais (46 Rue Okba Ben Nafia, tel. 0665/186 818, daily noon-3pm and 8pm-midnight, lounge open 5pm-2am with a limited menu, 250Dh) is a standard, if slightly over-priced, French restaurant a few blocks off Avenue Hassan II, northwest of the Institut Français. The menu serves up some classics, including foie gras. The lounge is nice, but the terrace with a commanding view over the medina is the place to be. The ample wine menu is a welcome treat for those needing to wet their whistle. Reservations are recommended.
